Too early?

When I was younger, my Dad completely ruled out ever giving my brother and I money for anything - he prepared our lunches, together with my Mom did our shopping, it is as if he had a fear that money would ruin us.

Looking at my kids, I don’t want them to mismanage their money, but I also want them to learn now by making mistakes, so my husband and I are considering a weekly allowance in lieu of good behavior and chores a prepaid credit card. Of course we will try try to discourage frivolous spending, and encourage saving.

I am curious how to parents approach this somewhat sensitive issue?
